The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology is an attached agency of the Department of the Interior and Local Government tasked with directing, supervising, and controlling the administration and operation of all district, city, and municipal jails in the Philippines, with the dual goals of inmate safety and development.
Brief Information About Bureau of Jail Management and Penology
The BJMP, as one of the five pillars of the Criminal Justice System, was established to address the growing concern about jail administration and penology issues.
Its primary clientele is detainees accused before a court who are temporarily held in such cells while undergoing investigation or awaiting final judgment, as well as those serving sentences of three years or less imposed by the court.
The Jail Bureau is mandated by R.A. No. 6975 to take operational and administrative supervision of all cities, districts, and municipal jails.
The Bureau’s rehabilitation program is divided into four primary areas: livelihood projects, educational and vocational training, recreation and sports, and religious and spiritual activities.
These were regularly adopted in order to eradicate criminals’ criminal patterns and reform them into law-abiding and productive citizens. Although the Jail Bureau’s office is confined within the jail to protect PDL, the Bureau has the inherent function of informing the public about jail operations and other things impacting the Philippines’ corrections pillar.
In addition, as a new and growing Bureau, BJMP aspires to keep the public informed about jail management and penology.
General Requirements for the BJMP Recruitment
No one shall be appointed as BJMP uniformed personnel unless he or she meets the following minimal qualifications:
- Must be a Filipino national.
- Must be of good moral character and have completed the neuropsychiatric evaluation, medical examination, and drug test to determine his/her physical and mental health.
- A bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution of study is required.
- Must be eligible for the second level
- Must not have been dishonorably discharged or fired for cause from a previous job.
- Interested applicants must not have been convicted of an offense or crime involving moral turpitude in a final judgment.
- On the day of the appointment, you must be between the ages of twenty-one (21) and thirty (30).
- Male applicants must be at least one meter and sixty-two centimeters (1.57m) tall, and female applicants must be one meter and fifty-seven centimeters (1.52m) tall; however, applicants from cultural communities are exempt from the height requirement.
- Must weigh no more than five kilograms (5kgs) over or under the standard weight for his/her height, age, and gender.

- Authenticated copy of Transcript of Records (TOR)
- Authenticated copy of College Diploma
- Birth Certificate issued by PSA
- Certificate of Eligibility or Board Rating
- Photocopies of NBI, Police, Barangay, MTC, RTC & Prosecutor’s Office Clearances
- Valid Community Tax Certificate
- Certificate of Confirmation from NCIP
- Marriage Certificate (if married)
